Adjusting Workouts Makes Them Personal – and Better
Tony, a lifelong tennis player in his mid-50s, noticed his game slipping and turned to gym workouts to restore his power and reduce pain. Unfortunately, the trainer he hired ignored Tony’s past injuries and concerns.
“He just kept saying, ‘Do it more’ and ‘Try harder,’” Tony recalls. “I quit going. I just didn’t see the point.”

As we age, injuries, surgeries, and natural wear-and-tear can affect movement. That doesn’t mean you should stop exercising — it means you need smarter, safer adjustments to keep progressing.
A modification is simply a change to an exercise to fit your current ability, prevent pain, or work around an injury. Even elite athletes use modifications when they’re hurt. The key is making the workout fit you, not forcing your body into a cookie-cutter plan.
Push-Ups: Start with wall push-ups or knee push-ups before progressing to full push-ups.
Squats: Use a chair or partial range of motion if you’ve had knee or hip replacements.
Core Work: Replace crunches with gentle core stability exercises to protect your back.
Cardio: Swap high-impact moves for low-impact options like walking or cycling.
“I can still train hard, but you can’t train like you’re 25,” says trainer Jim Adams, 51. “You need workouts that fit your age and body, not the other way around.”
A good trainer listens, assesses, and adapts your workout to fit your body and goals. Tony eventually found a trainer who helped him strengthen his core with Pilates and improve his tennis game safely.
“You know, it’s OK to get older. I know I can’t do everything I used to be able to do,” Tony says. “I want to work out with a trainer who understands that at least as well as I do.”
