Phil Shipp isn’t your typical 90-year-old. Earlier this summer, he won six gold medals at a Masters track and field competition. Even more remarkable? He gained muscle mass during training — living proof that it’s never too late to get stronger.
Leading up to nationals, Phil shifted his focus to resistance training. He lifted weights consistently and increased his strength week by week. By the time he competed, he not only felt stronger but had visibly added lean muscle.
“I had built muscle mass at 90 years old,” he said, still surprised himself.
Phil’s journey highlights an important truth: you can build strength and improve quality of life at any age. Too many people believe weakness and frailty are inevitable. They’re not.
Here’s what research shows:
Muscle responds at every age. Even seniors in their 70s, 80s, and 90s can add lean mass with resistance training.
Strength supports independence. More muscle means fewer falls, better balance, and the ability to carry groceries, climb stairs, or rise from a chair with ease.
Confidence grows with strength. Many older adults say exercise gives them more control over their lives, not just stronger bodies.
Starting in our 30s, we naturally lose muscle mass — a condition called sarcopenia. Left unchecked, it leads to weakness, frailty, and loss of independence.
The good news? Strength training is the antidote. Resistance training — whether with weights, bands, or body weight — helps preserve and rebuild muscle.
And this isn’t just about bulging biceps. You need muscle for the basics: standing up from a chair, walking up stairs, and even getting off the toilet. Muscle is essential for living — and for living well.
Phil’s regimen has evolved with age. Today, his workouts include:
Heavy weightlifting twice a week
Light weightlifting with pulleys and bands
Speed walking and box jumps for explosive strength
Mobility work to stay agile and pain-free
“The biggest benefactor is my health,” Phil says. “I’m able to still do quite a few things that most 90-year-olds can’t do — chores around the house, simple things like that, and no pains.”
Strength training is the closest thing we have to an anti-aging miracle. It keeps you moving, independent, and confident — no matter your age.
You don’t need to train for a track meet like Phil. But you can gain strength, energy, and freedom through consistent, safe exercise. Imagine yourself a year from now — stronger, more capable, and more confident.
