“Even the smallest steps can make a difference,” says Dr. Alan Rozanski, a New York City cardiologist who encourages patients to strength train, even if they’ve never exercised before.
Rozanski defines resistance snacks as short bouts of strength activity built into everyday life, such as:
Doing wall pushups in the kitchen
Performing chair squats when standing up from the couch
Balancing on one foot while brushing your teeth
Trying calf raises while your coffee brews
“These little actions are a gateway,” Rozanski explains. “If someone can succeed with one or two small things a day, it builds momentum. That success makes people more motivated to do a third or fourth, and eventually full workouts.”
As we grow older, muscle and bone strength naturally decline. Without resistance training, simple tasks like climbing stairs or carrying groceries can become more difficult.
Rozanski notes that while many seniors worry about heart health, the bigger issue can often be lost strength.
“Resistance training is a master tool for aging successfully,” he says. “It protects muscle, improves balance, lowers inflammation, and supports independence.”
The benefits start quickly: more energy, better confidence, improved self-esteem, and even a brighter mood.
If strength training feels overwhelming, begin with one resistance snack tied to a daily routine — like squats before sitting down, or calf raises at the counter.
Over time, those little steps add up to big improvements in mobility, confidence, and independence.
