Good News #1: Even in Advanced Age at a CrossFit Gym

Declining mobility and muscle strength with age affect many areas of life. Health consequences, an increased risk of falls, and reduced independence—something many older adults value greatly—can negatively impact both quality of life and life expectancy.

To counteract the natural loss of muscle and bone mass, experts recommend beginning strength, balance, and endurance training no later than age 30. But those who are well past that age are not powerless against the effects of time. An impressively fit group of seniors who have joined the Desert Fitness Collective in California proves that it’s worthwhile to start training even later in life.

Their workouts have nothing in common with the traditional chair exercises often associated with senior living facilities. Instead, they train in a gym that specializes in high-intensity functional fitness for sports like CrossFit or Hyrox. Accordingly, these active older adults lift heavy barbells, swing kettlebells, and train their balance, speed, and coordination with exercises performed on unstable surfaces.

Most of them started training at an age when many people feel they are already too old for intensive workouts. One example is 96-year-old Jean Stewart. When she no longer had the strength to prune the roses in her garden, she refused to accept increasing frailty. At age 81, she signed up for training—and just two years later she was deadlifting 70 kilograms. She still pushes a weighted sled today.

The program was developed by fitness trainer Cheryl Cohen, whose goal is to redefine fitness for seniors so they can maintain their quality of life and both mental and physical fitness for as long as possible. Her participants are living proof that it works.
